Burnering

There's an interesting question over at the Class Factotum's Journalspace page.

The question: if you have two burners on your range, same type and size, and you have two pots, one larger than the other, both each covering its burner, and you put the same amount of water in each -- which will boil first?

My guess was 'the one with the bigger metal surface area exposed to heat' -- but she doesn't give an answer. Any thoughts?

The smaller one - it has less mass to heat up, and can therefore transfer energy to the water slightly quicker.

Well, she doesn't give an answer.... but she implies that its the bigger one. Dunno...and I'm not really motivated to go do a test.
