Last night, I installed the
Avast! antivirus package on my mother's PC. It installed quickly, requiring a single reboot, and it had none of the stuff that drives me crazy about Norton. Plus, the home version download is free. The interface is a little clunky, but nothing outrageous. Not bad at all....

Was there a reason for choosing this one? I need to install an anti virus on my new lap top and have been dreading installing Norton. My operating system is Vista. Do you have any recommendations?
I just knew that I didn't want Symantec / Norton, and I wasn't impressed with the McAfee that came with my mother's PC. I did a Google search on anti-virus packages, and that one showed up in a PCWorld review with this:
"In a world of high-priced subscription antivirus programs that bog down your PC while protecting it, Avast stands out. This program is one of the few free antivirus applications that do as good a job as any of the big boys. Avast includes more than seven different kinds of shields, safe-surfing tools, and real-time virus protection for your OS, as well as Outlook. Updates automatically download and install, and Avast works with both Windows Vista and XP. Given all this, why pay?"
