Fairy Tales

Some time ago, my wife told me of reading an article that said, among other things, that all epic novels such as Lord of the Rings tended to have similar plot elements. There is a young, naive person; an older, mystical person; a quest to bring these people together, possibly with others, in search of some magical thing, or in fulfillment of some prophecy. There's someone who knew something that they needed on the quest, but would not tell them until The Proper Moment. There is at least one initial failure, and then success. There may have been others.

Given that, I suppose you could write your own saga -- but I think that this is simpler.
