You hear more these days about technology being used to give law enforcement abilities that they've never had before; abilities that expand their reach, give them the effect of having more people than they do. Though I generally like the idea, a lot of how I'll feel depends on how they use it. Being able to track one bad guy (we really need a new catch phrase, I think) across multiple jurisdictions because they now share information, thats a good thing. Finding that the guy who's getting a tax refund in southern California has an outstanding bill for child support in northern New Hampshire, that's good, too. Getting a ticket from a cop in West Profundo, Utah because I have an outstanding parking ticket in South Chipeapea, Tennessee -- not so good. And don't get me started about the NoFly list maintained by the fine folks at TSA.
But there are times when the use of technology to resolve crimes is just so cool, it almost -- almost -- makes me overlook the opportunity for misuse on the part of the fine folks at the NSA, FBI, CIA, MOUSE, and all of that. For example: Back To My Mac, from Apple, an innovative use of which is shown here.
