It may seem that as politics goes, the Democrats are only for Democrats, the Republicans only for Republicans. This is in fact not the case. I don't know what the Republicans plan, but on the Democratic side of the aisle, plans are already being made to hand over a degree of power to the Republicans; possibly, even, a majority that would sideline the Democrats to back-bench mutterers.
I know that this may be hard to believe, but here's the proof, from today's Washington Post:
Democratic leaders have stopped tamping down expectations and instead have set a new goal for the November elections of establishing a long-lasting majority that could dominate the chamber. "We will have a strong, confident, predictable Democratic majority to take us forward, and then we will be in 2010, 2012, on the path to a strong Democratic leadership for a long time to come," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Now, if that doesn't sound like the Republican plan of ten years ago -- and we know how well that worked, both as a guardian of the democratic process and guarantor of long-term Republican power -- what does?
