The thing about his Hummer is, at 14mpg city, it gets the same gas mileage as Ford Explorers, Toyota Sequoia's, Chevy Subarban's and quite a few others that are a dime a dozen on the road today. It actually gets better gas mileage than a Jeep Commander(9mpg), an Escalade, Dodge Durango (8mpg!), Nissan Armada, Land Rover's and a slew of others that no one even thinks to blink an eye at and are much more prevalent on the road. It gets better gas mileage (not by much but still better) than almost all conversion vans. Most mini-vans on the road gets from 15 to 17 mpg city. The Buick Terreza mini-van gets 12mpg city.
It gets better gas mileage than so many full size pick-up trucks there are too many to name.
Even knowing all this, I see a Hummer and cringe. It's just so obnoxious looking that it stands out a lot more than the other gas guzzlers. There are about 3 or 4 Hummer's in my town. Land Rovers and Explorer's though? I'd need to have a ticker to keep track of.
The people that did this are idiots. For one, because there is alot more car excess out there than just Hummers, but also, because they are directing their wrath at the wrong people. The guy this happened to looks like a tool and his truck looks ridiculous. But he's not the one who lets the car makers get away with not improving gas mileage year after year after year.
Mainly, I just feel like, if you commit a crime to make a point, you've already lost your point by proving you are no better than the people you are protesting against. Even if it is the most obnoxious vehicle most of us have ever seen hehe.
That's interesting. I hadn't heard those mileage numbers before. I suppose the Hummer people can't put out ads saying Hey, they're just as bad as we are! Makes me think that at about 25 mpg for the minivan, and the Prius's numbers, we're doing pretty good, even if in a few years they're be regarded as pathetic.
Its the size of the Hummer that gets me. Its a blatant in-your-face deal. I think that the Hummer could get twice the mileage it does now, and it'd still be objectionable.
I got those numbers at a website called mpgomatic.com. I've found it useful when comparing vehicles, before we bought ours.
I totally agree with you though. As I said, even though it's just as bad as many others and even better than some, it's still just so big and horrid looking I can't help but take offense to it. I guess it's more of a symbol for excess than anything else.

A symbol of excess -- exactly right.
