I'd like to recommend four books.
The Hungry Ocean -- by Linda Greenlaw. She's the captain of a fishing boat, full of grit, humor, and intelligence, talking about what its like in a tough, unforgiving profession.
Shutterbabe -- Deborah Copaken Kogan. She's a professional photographer who's been in some very dicey situations, and been there, done that.
Just Here Trying To Save A Few Lives -- Pamela Grim, MD. She's a trauma doc who's been there, done that, too -- sometimes, in the same war-beset chaos and misery.
Wooden Boats -- Michael Ruhlman. Life in a classic wooden boat manufactory, along with some comments on the 'wooden boat lifestyle'.
All four were fascinating.
