The Residence

My wife and I were watching a PBS program on the interior of the White House, showing rooms that we'll never get to see until we either become politicians or suck up to them, big time. . My daughter walked in and listened a bit to Laura Bush talking about how she'd had tea with Tony and Cherie Blair in this room, or a meeting with the Dalai Lama in that one, or dinner with various baseball players whom George had wanted to meet, over in the formal dining room, down the hall. After a bit, she stirred and said 'Is there anyone famous that this woman has met, or some lavish room she's just enjoyed so much, that she doesn't feel obliged to mention?' The little asides about 'this is one of our Cezannes' or ' I'm the one who had that covered in striped velvet' (or something like that), or the casual reference to how powerful people are really likable, just like ordinary people, didn't help.

Interesting program, but it didn't do much for my impression of Laura, which is unfortunate. I'd sort of liked her.
