Hamas

I like things that are black and white, so I'm having a really hard time figuring out whats up with Hamas.

On the one hand, I read that what Israel is doing is the right thing, because Hamas is lobbing rockets into their country whenever the hell they feel like it, no special targets, just your basic terroristic warfare. These are not the actions of a community that wants and is willing to work toward a lasting peace.

On the other hand, I read that Hamas is the government that got elected, just as we said we wanted, but without the result we wanted (ie, anyone but THEM!), and that when Israel attacks them, they can be and frequently are just as willing to aim at no special targets, just whomever happened to be where the rocket landed.

The impression I get is that both governments are legitimate, both despise both the other government and the other government's country, both would like to see the other wiped off the map, and both are willing to do anything to make that happen -- varying from 'peace accords' to 'rockets at midnight'. The Israeli's haven't sent in suicide bombers, which I suppose counts for something.

I'm willing to believe that no, its much more complex than that, but that's how it feels.

You know, that conflict and the hatred between the Arabs and the Jews goes back so far and is so deep that I just don't know if peace will ever be possible. Maybe a miracle, maybe someday. One step forward, two steps back, always.

I know that it is one of the many things where reasonable people can disagree, and where unreasonable people shout fiercely. I am reluctantly willing to admit that it may not be solvable. I saw a comic news article on the Newsbiscuit site saying that the Israeli leaderhip said 'You know what, this whole separate state thing just isn't working out, the hell with it'. I thought No, thats not fair, thats not right... but it sure would be convenient.

I hate that this is 'our problem'. I vaguely understand why, but I hate it.
