I came across this phrase on a web page, just a few moments ago - "I really wonder when we're going to start having a serious national debate about inflation." It brought to mind this line from The American President - "Can we now finally have a serious debate about family values?"
Could we ever have a 'serious national' anything? Let alone a 'debate' or a 'discussion', which imply certain rules of evidence and of civility? I'm guessing not. To do so would take more intellectual firepower and focus than most of us are willing or able to bring to bear. It'd require too much of us. We much prefer bloviators.
