After mentioning in an earlier post that I didn't really know the difference between the two, I posted this question to a search engine called Brainboost: what is the difference between muslim and islam?
To my surprise, I got back some pretty concrete answers. They can be found here.
Oddly enough, the first question happens to come from someone from Pennsylvania. We must be an inquisitive lot.

Yes, I do. I guess I had assumed that if the words meant roughly the same thing, they'd sound roughly the same. Then again, Catholic and Christian mean roughly the same -- except that they don't. Heck, 'Catholic' doesn't even mean what its actual definition is.
As for the neo-zionist -- well, I'm not sure what that means (I assume: non-Jewish defender of Israel?), but I gather you don't mean it in a pleasant way. I don't think I've ever heard the word Neo-anything sound good, except, of course, Neosporin, and the guy in The Matrix. Run, Neo!
The term Christian neo-zionist or simply Christian Zionist as I understand it is more along the lines of a person like Hagee that opportunistically supports the state of Israel not because they support Jews or the right of the Jews to have a state but rather because they see it as the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies and a way to advance their Christian beliefs.
I listened to an interview/discussion on the topic of Christian Zionism on NPR some time ago.

You're right about the term "neo" usually referring to something negative.
