Politicos

I'm fascinated, in a minor way, by the frenzy with which some folks are proclaiming the selection of the next thought leader for the Republican party.

Sometimes, its the lack of thought leader -- that would be the Sarah Palin brigade, who have been saying for a while that She's The One; if it hadn't been for that damn McCain, and his pusillanimous unwillingness to slime Obama, they'd be making a sled dog run across the Rose Garden right now. Sometimes, it's the Intensely Religious, who are promoting Bobby Jindal -- their justification seems to be that Obama is non-white and smart, and Jindal is non-white and smart, so hey! Occasionally, its the people who harken back to the glory days, when it was shown that you don't need to have good ideas, or, if you do, be able to implement them -- you just need to be able to stop the other guy from doing what he wants to do. Blocking is the same as acting, in their minds. Those folks are proclaiming the return of St. Newt Gingrich, here to straighten his toga and show the error of our ways. Finally, there's those who don't want to think, they just want to do somethin' -- they like Rush Limbaugh, because he's bombastic, not troubled by inconsistancies in his positions, and, most important, he doesn't use difficult words.

It almost makes you forget that Lincoln was a Republican.
