Annie Leibowitz took a picture of Tom Wolfe before he wrote "The Right Stuff". He's driving a car, somewhere sunny, and you can, just tell, there's something about him. Either it was him, or Leibowitz's photography, but it is a striking image. (It's in her "At Work" book.)
I think it's his cocky 'I don't care WHAT you think, I know I look good' air. He'd likely have the same attitude in a t shirt and cutoffs-- except that he'd never wear that.
