Cronkite on Vietnam:

"It is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could."

Now that's classy. A little sad there, at the end, but still: classy.

I was just watching the History Channel's thing about the Moon landings. Just before it started, I mentioned to the Mrs that Cronkite's reporting was the best; it's such a pity he missed seeing the anniversary by so few days.

Yesterday, I read commments on the Neo-Neocon web site to the effect that Cronkite was wrong; history showed that the VietCong were on the verge of losing, and he effectively helped them win, by his commentary. I seem to recall differently.

Ah, neocons - rewriting history as quickly as the communists and fascists.

You know, this is the first time that I actually thought Wait a minute, that's not how it happened..... I think its also true that in retrospect perhaps something WAS happening that was desirable, but the side effects at the time were simply too much too bear. The VC might well have been on the verge of failure, but we were on the verge of anarchy. We had to stop.
