The Law

This, I like. From CNN:

Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said Wednesday he is suspending foreclosure evictions in Cook County, which had been on track to reach a record number of evictions, many because of mortgage foreclosures. He said many of the evictions involve renters who are paying their rent on time but are being thrown out because the landlord has fallen behind on mortgage payments.

So how is that gonna work? I don't understand.

Basically, he's not going to enforce the eviction notices until he can be certain that the people affected are actually culpable, and not merely the victims of someone else's failure to pay.

How on earth could they throw out renters who are paying on time? If that's what they're doing, then good for that sheriff. I think there might be cause for prosecution with the people trying to evict the on time payers.

The evictions were ordered on the assumption that the owner had notified the renters that they were in danger of eviction for nonpayment of rent. Since they had paid, that would clearly have been bogus, but as he had skipped the country, they would never have gotten that message. I'm not sure who actually started the eviction process, but I'm guessing it was the bank, because they hadn't been paid by the building owner.
