GBH

Several weeks ago, we were walking through the neighborhood, passing over the bridge that covers the wetlands stream, and into the housing development there. On one side, the ground is undeveloped -- it's a swale -- except for some paths that have been cut out of the tall grass by the Audubon Society. As we went by, my wife glanced down the path and stopped dead. Look, she whispered, so I did. It was worth stopping for. Halfway down the path, a great blue heron was standing, head cocked towards us. Abruptly, it spread its massive wings, flapped two or three times, and soared into the sky.

Since then, every time we go by, we glance down that path....just in case.
