Expectations and Ruminations

My daughter's friend's mother said her daughter freaks if she doesn't get an A in everything, every time. Whereas my daughter.....

Good grades are important but if they have you running like a gerbil on the wheel I'm not sure if its really teaching you anything.
I have this theory that besides really smart people who can easily achieve good grades the people who are obsessed with getting perfect grades are very self-interested.
But maybe I'm just saying that because I don't care a lot about grades hah.

I don't think they're necessarily self-interested -- at least, in a bad way. I think its a form of compensation -- I can't control other parts of my life, but I can control this.

Its not that I want her to excel (well, yeah, I do, but) as that I want her to care more about it. You know, parents always say As long as you did your best... but in their hearts they're adding ...which means getting mostly A's!

Yes, it is a form of control too, especially among younger kids too I think. Maybe I am just cynical because college students drive me crazy hah.

I'm sure my tune will change a bit when I have kids someday :-)

Everybody's view of the world changes when the child is their responsibility. Sometimes, I'm amazed that we've done as well as we have... and sometimes I realize that the kiddo has a lot to do with it, too. She's good because of us, and she's good because of herself. I'm biased, but this I know: she's a class act.

Me, too, as it happens, only for me, the class is third grade!
