This afternoon, I came across an ad for a new HD television. I could not tell you which it was -- they all blended together a while back, in my mind, and though the cognoscenti undoubtedly speak knowledgeably about HDMI inputs and true black and anti-glare this and aspect-ratio that, the one thing that stuck in my mind from the ad was the statement that the screen was surrounded by, and I more or less quote, a shiny black border.
Why Black?
Why is it necessary to have a glistening black border? Bad enough when it's black matte, which to me always looks like the vendor got a special deal from Plywood R Us, but glistening? Is that so that more of the room light can reflect from it? But better than that -- why black at all? Why not a warm cherry, or a deep mahogany, or some other wood? Heck, it doesn't have to be great wood, and I'm aware of the idea that it should be from a sustainable source -- too bad, really, as I've always wanted a television cabinet surrounded by real ivory -- but something other than black, something to bring some warmth to the environment? Some style?
Designers and augmenters, why not incorporate wood around the technology -- like this?
