We received a note this afternoon that one of the LEC students is being sent home early. He stole money from his host family. Being sent home is a major blow to his own family, as they have to buy a one-way ticket today for a flight on Saturday -- he doesn't get to use his original return flight ticket. Of course, it's even more a major blow because -- well, no one wants to think that their child could do such a thing. But this one did. I'm sure he'll be hearing about it for quite some time to come.
It reminded me yet again of how very fortunate we have been to get the girl that we did. I suppose it's been obvious that we really like her, and I will admit that I occasionally thought wouldn't it be nice if she could stay with us for a couple of years? Problems with that idea are obvious, but still. Given the chance....
Thinking about it, I was moved to send a note to her mother, thanking her once again for trusting her bright, funny, intelligent daughter to us. Kids like that are special, and, at the moment, even more than usual.

This sounds like a good program for both student and the host family. When it goes well, it is. You sound like a thoughtful host and I'm sure the girl's mother will appreciate your note
I think a note is a fabulous idea!
In fact, I did. Her mother was startled at the information. and seems to appreciate hearing what her daughter is up to. I guess she's as good as MY daughter when it comes to keeping the folks informed....
