Okay, Impeach Him

It's time.

WASHINGTON — President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans’ mail without a judge’s warrant, the New York Daily News has learned.

The president asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Mr. Bush then issued a “signing statement” that declared his right to open people’s mail under emergency conditions.

That claim is contrary to existing law and contradicted the bill he had just signed, say experts who have reviewed it.

We really need to get him out of there before he decides that martial law is clearly necessary... and while he's at it, he needs to extend his term of office 'until the job's done'.

I think that his general thought process is 'This is a terrible enemy, and I must be able to do anything that I believe might contribute to their defeat; this effort must not be constrained in any way." Initially, most Americans would have agreed with him. Now, fewer do. It might be different if he could show that his efforts have substantially worked, but he cannot -- even if they have, he is hoist on his own 'secrecy' petard.

We can't afford to forget that this enemy really is vicious, amoral, and heinous, but we can't give up what makes us what we are in the process of working to defeat them. To put it in the words of a fictional character I read recently, "The only thing you can't give up to get your heart's desire... is your heart."

Happy New Year to you as well.
