Oh, no. She knows what it will be like -- at least, so far as anyone who's never done it can know. For example, she knows that her entire first year, she'd be a 'rook', unable to leave campus, and required to follow many, many rules. She's not fazed.
I'm very surprised. I should not be -- she'd wanted to go to the Academy, she's planned on ROTC, this is a midway -- but I am.
I should mention -- this is a kid who likes predictability, likes structure. She's not a drone -- she is creative, funny, borderline intellectual -- but she's had those first two characteristics for years. A military environment could very well work for her. More than that: she told me that she wants to serve her country, both because it could line her up with useful experience, and because she thinks its the right thing to do.
The best, and in MHO, the ONLY reason to join a military is to serve your country. Unfortunately, the vast majority of MY generation joined to "Get away from that SOB dad who was whuppin' me every day", or if the judge said "If I hear you are in basic training by next month, this case will be remanded indefinitely", or from a lot of women, "Anything some guy can do, I can do better". It was amazing how good us "gutter sweepings" turned out. But we were good enough for what they wanted us for.

Maybe she thinks it will be all drum corps all the time.
Breathe, Bill. Don't forget to breathe.
