I haven't baked anything for a while, and though I'm not a baking freak, I do like to do it every so often. Last week I mentioned to my wife how nice it was to pull premade honey wheat dough from the frizzer and make our own pizza on the grill -- the dough thawed in less than an hour, and it was just a lot of fun. I'd forgotten about that, and then today comes an ad from King Arthur flour advertising dough for baking pizza on a grill. Of course, I'd make my own (did that sound snobbish? Hope not), but its sparked the thought again.
What I'd really like to do, though, is make some bread. I mentioned that orange bread; that could be fun. Or maybe some English muffins -- I know we had them in London, but I don't recall if they called them that or something else, like damned American impertinence muffins. I've only made them once or twice, but I enjoyed it each time. They're amazingly easy to make. The tough part was finding something to hold the dough while it baked, and I just saved a couple of 32 ounce cans from tomato puree -- lids cut off on both ends, of course. Worked like a charm, and the price was right.
Speaking of price, I mentioned a few days ago about streaming video from the PC to the TV. Well, turns out that theres about to be this device called Slingcatcher.... Don't know the price, exactly, but one article estimated it around $200, which would normally not be a problem, but in my current fiscal austerity mood.... But maybe for Christmas?

Awwww, Bill! Don't give me anymore gadgets to want :)
As for baking on your own instead of something pre-packaged, it's not snobby at all. It's just more fun that way! Not mention more tasty.
I didn't know you were a gadgeteer, L. I wouldn't have mentioned the Harley if I did.
And anyway, I now see that perhaps the Slingcatcher doesnt work alone -- might need their SlingProjector, too. Argh. All this slinging, makes me feel like Spiderman...
I am a gadgeteer for thing cell phone things, computer things, and things for my tv. I really love tv gadgets.
Lol at you "slinging" :)
But why is a Harley not recommended for a gadgeteer? If I was going to buy a bike it would only be a Harley. I could never do one of those ridiculous and trendy foreign bikes that the kids zoom around on now. They're just silly looking.
I'd want the loudest and rudest Harley chopper I could find!
The harley would be contraindicated only because recommending one to someone with a lust for gadgets would be like drifting a chocolate eclair in front of someone with a chocolate jones. It might well lead to the most supremely decked out bike around. Such fixation would inevitably lead to --- hmmm... Maybe its not such a bad idea!
Hey Bill - Check out kingarthurflour.com/blog - it's actually a recipe and step-by-step instructions for making your own pizza dough for grilling. Mixes are good for people in a hurry, but lots of us (like you) like to do it from start to finish. Thanks for the mention- PJ Hamel, blogger/test baker, King Arthur Flour
PJ -- I've seen the blog you mention, and my feeling was, its excellent. It really, really sounded to me as if it were written by bakers who like to write (and incidentally mention the KA brand), and not marketers who sell the KA brand (and incidentally like to bake, and write about it). Its good enough that I really can't afford to spend too much time reading it, or I would spend my life, baking. Then again, would that be so bad?
