I just finished reading French Toast, the book by the woman who's American, married to a Frenchman. The good news is, there's a lot to like about the way the French do things like education and health care. The bad news is, their attitudes toward casual friendliness and what's acceptable when eating with people other than your family is just about one hundred eighty degrees from how I tend to approach those things. Which means I could be in for some seriously unpleasant surprises in France -- even if the French are too well cultured to show dismay/surprise/astonishment. Though, who knows -- these are people from a small town, and we are family. Kind of.
