HealthCare

There was a time when I thought I was well-informed about the details of the health care bill. Not any more.

This morning, I was in a bookstore, and heard an elderly man muttering that "Obamacare is terrible, costs too much, can't use Medicare.....hope the Republicans get in, vote all that stuff out'. I thought Well, wait a minute, thats not right....

Okay, fine,
I asked myself. Exactly how is it wrong? Just one or two points... Take your time....

Crap.

No way to deal with willful ignorance. Many people in this country cannot and will not think. Because it's so much easier not to. Sigh.

But in myt case, I can't come up with a concise, even if incomplete, statement of why I support health care, aka Obamacare. Just 'becuase Obama thinks its a good idea' is not intellectually satisfying. I should be able to do better than that.

Because everyone has the right to health care. Why should a profit-making entity have the right to determine the quality of your life, or even if it can continue? (The Supreme Court has said it was okay for an insurer to deny life-saving treatment on the grounds that it was too expensive; and George Bush, as Governor of Texas, signed a law that said the entity that can cut off a baby while it is in the incubator is the insurer, not the parents or doctors.)

"Obamacare" is a step in the right direction. It's not perfect, but at some point Americans will be able to enjoy what has been common in Europe and Britain for decades: the right to expect that their lives are not subject to the whims of some profit-making entity. Medicare was the first step. (I loved the "keep government out of Medicare!" protest signs.)

That's why "ObamaCare" is so important - because your well-being is more important than someone's share price. :-)
