I don't know much about spyware and rootkits and all of that. But I do know that letting anyone install such on your PC is a very bad thing, and its nothing that anyone would have any reason to allow them to do. Its all upside for them, and all downside for you. But if you know there's a serious downside, you might not let them do it, even if you otherwise might. So how do they get around that? By not telling you that they're doing it. (For example: the infamous Sony rootkit.)
