Games
My daughter was playing Monopoly with the eight year old son of our neighbor. He picked up one building and said "Is this a jail? Because it looks like where my dad is."
He said that to stimulate conversation as well as it reminding him of the building where his dad is. If you know the mom well enough and feel comfortable you could just let him talk about it. He feels comfortable with your family.
I don't know how comfortable he feels. His mother was right there at the time, which helped. And I've done a little baby-sitting with him, once or twice so he's been around me. I just feel so sorry for him - having a father in jail, especially at his age.
