The whole experience has certainly lost its charm, but having to wonder if you're going to die in the next ten minutes does give it a certain piquancy.
I thought that about the hover, too. I have done a crab landing or two in a cessna 150, and it scared me. If I had been on those planes, I'd have been whimpering under a blanket.

Some of them look like Thunderbirds Are Go! airplanes. :-)
And they all looked like they were coming in on a hover! Neat.
