Dreaming

Strange dreams last night.  Dreamed about the gutless cowards of the US Congress, who can't even be moved by the deaths of children.  Wondered how'd they'd feel if an assassin with a high-capacity ammunition holder started slaughtering them. Won't happen - probably - because the defenders of liberty make damn sure to encircle themselves with armed guards.  I'd like to see Obama giving a speech tearing them a collective new anal aperture for their craven style, but that's not likely to happen, either.

I used to think that adults used reason and compassion to rule the country, but I don't think that anymore. Sometimes I despair about the parth of our country.  We seem to be on a downward spiral.  I know, thats traditional for people as they get older, to think that, but still: I do, I really do.

Dreamed about drones.  Those things - the small ones - are just made for assassinations.  Air Force One lands, President's on his way down the steps - a drone whips in from a mile away.  Are we doing anything to figure out how to defend against this?  Of course not.  We'll wait for a disaster...or past.

Dreamed about the trip to France.  One of the people I will meet has a husband who speaks no English at all; the other has a wife who speaks just a little bit.  Apprehensive about this.  Not to mention,  the TGV trips. Est-ce que c'est ma voiture? Just hope I don't get on the one for Croatia instead of Paris.

At least I didn't dream about the sequestration, aka the death of a thousand cuts.

Problem is...guns in the hands of responsible adults is a good thing. The best touch stone for a free society is the simple question "are you allowed to own weapons"?

Its when you mix people into the mix...gang bangers, nuts, criminals, religious extremists...none of whom think of themselves as "out of control". Yet, they ARE the problem.

How do you plan to control them?

Who watches the watchers?

How do you plan to be free of tyranny without guns?
Pinochet took guns away
Bashar Al Assad took guns away
Saddam Hussain took guns away
Muhamar Ghadaffi took guns away

Why do you suppose they did that?

These are serious questions, and the problem is that these very fundamental questions have been glossed over.
From MY point of view your founding fathers were not stupid. As you know, I read the works of Thos Paine and Ben Franklin and others as they worked to create the most perfect republic the world has ever seen. They warned that the government will continually erode fundamental rights in the name of "national security".

It may be time to go back to the original books and see just what they had in mind. I think that you will find that they were not mistaken, but their words have, in fact, been updated and in some cases distorted.

The problem with the original books is that that's the Second Amendment, and there's a comma in there that can cause it to be interpreted - once as a predicate, and once as a general observation.

I believe that the intent of the Amendment was to allow the colonists to defend themselves in case the government tried to overreach itself. That's actually what gun freaks here say. I don't have a problem with that. I doubt any individual would be successful against an attack by a uniformed and trained military, but that's a different question. Want to have a gun to protect yourself against your government? Let alone, thieves? Go for it.

My problem is that back then a crazy person could kill three or four people before getting killed himself. Today, he can kill thirty or forty. That's what I want stopped, and that's what our Senate just weaseled on.
