I read a post-mortem of Half-Life in a now-defunct game developer's magazine awhile back, and they mentioned that intellectual property thing. I don't think they were a flat organization at that point, but they were definitely on track to it. I remember trying to figure out how I could use it in my own management jobs! (I never did, but that was because I couldn't bridge the gap, mentally.)
